The primary difference between a PLC (or Programmable Logic Controller) and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is the fact that a PLC is hardware and SCADA is (generally) software, though some would argue that SCADA is a plant’s overall control system using hardware and software elements. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) is a control system architecture comprising computers, networked data communications and graphical user interfaces (GUI) for high-level process supervisory management, while also comprising other peripheral devices like programmable logic controllers (PLC) and discrete proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers to interface with process plant or machinery. A SCADA system is considerably more of a large scale system than that of PLC systems. At the center, the SCADA system is the operator, though, in PLC control systems, the middle is simply the PLC. Generally, SCADA is completely a software package that helps to monitor the entire area of the plant. The basic architecture of the SCADA begins with a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) or Remote Terminal Units (RTUs). Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) is monitoring software used to control the PLC and record data, even from remote locations. A SCADA system is considerably more of a large scale system than that of PLC systems.
